Does the MAZDA3 Have Front Wheel Drive?
The 2020 Mazda3 comes with standard front-wheel drive for both the sedan and coupe body styles. AWD is available as an upgrade, but many Surrey drivers are satisfied with the way their Mazda FWD handles all kinds of road conditions. That’s because FWD Mazda vehicles use Skyactiv® Technology to enhance performance and fuel efficiency.
Is Mazda3 front-wheel drive more fuel efficient than all-wheel drive? Read below to learn more about the benefits of FWD vs. AWD. Don’t hesitate to contact Freeway Mazda if you need help comparing 2020 Mazda3 and Mazda3 Sport drivetrain specs!
What is Front-Wheel Drive?
In a front-wheel drive vehicle, the transmission sends power to the front wheels only. Benefits of FWD include better traction on slick roads in Burnaby. And yes, you’ll also get improved fuel economy: equipped with front-wheel drive, the Mazda3 sedan’s fuel consumption rate is a solid 7.7 L per 100 km.* By comparison, the rate for AWD Mazda3 models is a combined 8.7 L/100 km.* If you know you won’t be heading off-road in Richmond anytime soon, opting for FWD will translate to savings at the gas pump.
Is the MAZDA3 Front-Wheel Drive?
You read above that Mazda FWD vehicles use proprietary Skyactiv® Technology. So is Mazda3 front-wheel drive model using this special technology to boost FWD performance? It is: the 6-speed automatic transmission boosts fuel efficiency, assists with smoother, quicker, and more precise acceleration, and gives you the power to manually adjust how power is portioned out to your wheels. That means you can divert extra power to the wheels that need traction most — and more control on Vancouver roads.
How to Rotate Tires: Front-Wheel Drive vs. All-Wheel Drive
AWD and FWD tire treads wear at different rates. Because all 4 tires are engaged, AWD tires wear more quickly and must be rotated more frequently than FWD. FWD and AWD tires also require different rotation patterns. Follow these guidelines for FWD vs. AWD tire rotation pattern and frequency.
How to Rotate AWD and FWD Tires
- FWD Tires — Move the front tires to the back, keeping them in the same right/left orientation. Then move the rear tires to the front, but switch them from left to right.
Right front → Right rear Left front → Left rear Right rear → Left front Left rear → Right front
- AWD Tires — For AWD, it’s the same as FWD but in reverse. Move the front tires to the back, switching left and right. Move the rear tires to the front, keeping each tire on the same side.
Right front → Left rear Left front → Right rear Right rear → Right front Left rear → Left front
AWD vs. FWD Tire Rotation Frequency
- Front-Wheel Drive — Rotate every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.
- Rear-Wheel Drive — Rotate every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.
- All-Wheel Drive — Rotate every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
