The 2022 Mazda CX-3 is the perfect small crossover SUV for negotiating the roads of Surrey, Burnaby, Langley, Richmond, and the wider Vancouver area. It has the sensational SUV styling that’s so sought-after these days, but it’s also perfectly proportioned and expertly engineered to meet the demands of daily driving in the town or city.
The 2022 Mazda CX-3 follows a similar format to the Mazda city car it used to share a platform with previously in the Mazda lineup. There are three trim levels in the 2022 range: the entry-level GX, mid-range GS, and the range-topping CX-3 GT. Front-wheel-drive is standard for GX and GS versions of the 2022 CX-3, but top-of-the-line GT models get Mazda’s i-Activ AWD system as part of standard equipment, and that system is also available as an upgrade for the mid-range GS specification.
All three of the 2022 Mazda CX-3 trim levels utilize the same engine, which is a Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder unit that puts out 148 horsepower and 146 lb.-ft. of torque, which gets sent to the front or all four wheels through a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. GX models come standard with the six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed auto with a manual shift mode and Drive Selection is available. GS and GT versions of the CX-3 come with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission that boasts a manual shift mode, Drive Selection switch, and paddle shifters.
The best fuel economy figures available for the 2022 Mazda CX-3 are 8.3 L/100 km in the city and 6.9 L/100 km on the highway, and that’s for front-drive models with the automatic transmission. The extra capability of all-wheel-drive doesn’t come with a particularly significant fuel economy penalty as those models can still deliver 8.6 L/100 km in the city and 7.4 L/100 km on the highway.
Mazda is becoming renowned for offering impressive levels of standard features at all trim levels, and the 2022 CX-3 is no exception. Some smart 16-inch alloy wheels are standard for GS models, and the GT comes with an even more impressive set of 20-inch alloys. All three trim levels come with a superb suite of safety features as part of their standard equipment, which helps the CX-3 get top ratings for overall safety from the NHTSA and the IIHS. But suppose you want the most advanced safety features such as Forward Obstruction Warning, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and the Traffic Sign Recognition System. In that case, all those and more are standard with the CX-3 GT.
GT versions of the Mazda also come with such upscale standard features as a Colour Active Driving Display, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, advanced keyless entry, leather upholstery, a 7-speaker premium Bose sound system, a 10-way power driver’s seat with memory function, and plenty more besides.
The 2022 Mazda CX-3 checks all the right boxes as a smart, stylish, well-equipped, safe, and fun-to-drive urban daily driver, but it also delivers all the comfort and enjoyable driving characteristics you need for journeys of any length.
