Don’t assume that if you need a vehicle with seven-seat capability that exudes practicality and versatility, you compromise on style, comfort, and luxury. You can also forget the idea that having a seven-seat vehicle that’s stunningly stylish and great to drive around Surrey, Burnaby, Langley, Richmond and the greater Vancouver area means having to dig deep to pay luxury brand prices. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 checks all the practicality, versatility, desirability, and style boxes, and then some, but it also does it at a price that won’t make you weep.
The 2022 Mazda CX-9 comes in five different trim levels that range from a very nicely equipped and well-appointed base model to a range-topper that could easily go head-to-head with luxury Japanese and European models costing considerably more. The entry model in the 2022 lineup is the CX-9 GS, and after that, we have the GS-L, GT, and Kuro before the range reaches its impressive conclusion with the sensational, top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature. Just as with all Mazda’s crossovers in 2022, every version of the CX-9 now comes with all-wheel drive as part of their standard equipment.
You might not immediately associate non-luxury three-row SUVs with excellent handling and an enjoyable driving experience, but that’s what you can expect from the 2022 Mazda CX-9 as the largest vehicle Mazda builds, handles and performs in a very similar way to the brand’s smaller, lighter crossovers. Every CX-9 comes with a 2.5-litre turbo-four under its hood that develops 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque when running on standard gas, but that improves quite noticeably to 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. If you choose to upgrade to using premium 93 octane fuel.
That impressive amount of power goes to all four wheels through a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Still, its height and higher centre of gravity, the way the CX-9 drives and handles is decidedly carlike. Mazda has done an impressive job of eliminating the body roll that SUVs of this size can sometimes suffer from.
It’s hard to ignore the premium feel inside the cabin of the CX-9, especially from the GS-L trim level upwards, as you are then treated to standard leather upholstery. The entry-level CX-9 GS is an excellent option as it comes with LED lights, auto on/off headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear privacy glass, tri-zone automatic climate control, radar-controlled cruise control, remote keyless entry, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a 10.25-inch colour display infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The CX-9 GS-L model is always going to be a tempting upgrade as it doesn’t cost more than the GS, and you get that leather upholstery in a choice of Black or Sand, heated rear outboard seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a rear power liftgate with programmable height adjustment.
The 2022 Mazda CX-9 will draw you in simply with how it looks, but you’ll be even more impressed with this outstanding three-row crossover SUV when you get to know it better and investigate further. The best way to familiarise yourself with the CX-9 is to come and do a test drive at Freeway Mazda at 15420 104 Ave, Surrey, BC; you can also call us at (604) 583-7121 for more information and to book your test drive appointment.
