If you want to experience the future today you could search out one of those virtual reality headsets, but an easier, more enjoyable, and more practical way would be to get behind the wheel of the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV. And the good news for you, if you live somewhere like Surrey, New Westminster, Maple Ridge or Vancouver, is you are in the privileged position of living in one of only two Canadian states where the MX-30 EV is currently available, which are Quebec and British Columbia.
This is the first battery-powered Mazda to be offered for sale in North America after originally going on sale in Europe and its native Japan. There’s a distinctly sporty look about the MX-30 EV with its sloping roof and rear-hinged doors that do help it resemble some of Mazda’s other crossovers, but the front fascia is pretty unique to this model and sets it apart from its gasoline-powered siblings.
There are just two versions of the 2022 MX-30 EV for buyers to choose from at the moment, which is the entry-level GS and the range-topping GT. Both models share the same powertrain and both are very well equipped in their standard form, but the GT is a little more upscale both in terms of its exterior styling and its standard equipment.
A 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery allows the Mazda’s electric motor to put out a very respectable 143 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, but don’t think of those figures in the same way you would with a gas-powered equivalent because the way the power is delivered by the electric motor is very different and a lot more immediate.
The range of the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV is approximately 161 kilometers but the battery can be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity in just 36 minutes via a DC fast charger. Using a 240-volt Level 2 charger, an 80 percent charge takes around 2 hours and 50 minutes, but you could also charge from a regular Level 1 120-volt outlet overnight.
Standard equipment levels are very high here with both versions of the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV. The entry-level GS model comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, tire pressure monitors, an 8-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, navigation, air conditioning, push-button start, advanced keyless entry, LED lights, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and even a windshield-projected colour Active Driving Display. The GS also comes with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Move up to the GT model and you then also get the likes of a premium Bose sound system with 12 speakers, HomeLink wireless control system, two-tone leatherette and cloth-trimmed upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, Front Cross Traffic Alert, 360° View Monitor and more.
It’s a bit of a cliché to say you need to get behind the wheel of a certain car to really understand what it’s like, but this is a car where that’s absolutely the case, especially if you’ve never driven an electric car before. Come and try the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV for yourself with a test drive today from Freeway Mazda located at 15420 104 Ave, Surrey, BC, or give us a call on (604) 583-7121 for more information about pricing and availability and to book a test drive appointment for a time that suits you.
