Strictly speaking, the 2022 Mazda3 is a compact sedan with excellent handling, stunning exterior styling, nicely appointed interiors, and available all-wheel drive that has more than a hint of luxury about it. However, you won’t have to pay anything like luxury car money to feel like a million dollars driving around Surrey, Burnaby, Langley, Richmond, and anywhere else in the Vancouver area in a new Mazda3 as it delivers a premium experience at non-luxury prices.
It’s hard to imagine anyone not being able to find a version of the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan that’s right for them with five extremely desirable trim levels in the current lineup to choose from. The first model in the current range is the Mazda3 Sedan GX, and from there, we go to the GS, the GS with Luxury Package, the GT, and finally to the pinnacle of the range in the shape of the GT Turbo. Front-wheel-drive is the standard drivetrain for all non-turbo variants of the latest Mazda3 Sedan, but you can add AWD to the GS, GS with Luxury Package, and the GT, but GT Turbo models are exclusively AWD.
It’s common for automakers to stick with one engine for their smaller models these days but Mazda continues to offer consumers plenty of choice with three different engines for the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan. The first of the trio of powerplants is a 2.0-liter inline-four that develops 155 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque, but if you’d like a more powerful option there’s also a 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit that ups the power ante to 186 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. It probably won’t come as a surprise that the version of the Mazda3 with Turbo in its name has a turbocharged engine that completes the three-engine lineup, and this unit is a 2.5-liter turbo-four which then provides the Mazda3 with 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque to play with.
GX versions of the Mazda3 Sedan send their power to your choice of the front or all four wheels through a standard six-speed manual or an available six-speed automatic transmission, and front-drive versions of the Mazda3 are rated for fuel economy by the EPA at 8.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.4 L/100 km on the highway. Even if you opt for the most powerful turbo model with its standard AWD the fuel economy ratings are still reasonable at 10.1 L/100 km in the city and 7.5 L/100 km on the highway
It shouldn’t be too much of a shock to find that a car that comes standard across the range with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control gets great safety ratings. However, the Mazda3 gets top marks in this important area with a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.
Even the entry-level Mazda3 GX comes with an impressive list of standard features that include the likes of keyless start, an 8-speaker sound system, 16-inch alloys, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, air conditioning, a full set of power features, an electronic parking brake, and an 8.8-inch screen for an infotainment system with full Bluetooth connectivity and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
The 2022 Mazda3 Sedan is a compact car that serves as a clear reminder that there’s more to life than just trucks and SUVs these days. There are many different versions to choose from that cover a wide range of specifications, budgets, and performance levels, but every single one is an absolute stunner that deserves serious consideration.
