The 2022 Mazda3 Sport is a compact hatchback car that isn’t technically a luxury model, but onlookers would be hard-pressed to tell it wasn’t from a luxury brand if they saw it on the roads of Surrey, Burnaby, Langley, Richmond, and the wide Vancouver area. With its stunning exterior styling, high-grade interiors, excellent handling, and available AWD, the 2022 Mazda3 Sport is tough to find fault with.
Although there are just three different trim levels to choose from in the 2022 Mazda3 Sport lineup, there are plenty of ways to configure this stunningly attractive car to suit your style and needs. The entry-level model is the GX, the mid-range model is the SA, and the top-of-the-range version of the Mazda3 hatch is the GT.
Front-wheel drive and G-Vectoring Control Plus are standard with all three versions of the 2022 Mazda3 Sport, but the GS and GT versions can be upgraded to include the extra capability of Mazda’s i-Activ AWD system.
Many automakers would adopt a take-it-or-leave-it attitude to engines for a car and stick with a single engine and powertrain across all three trim levels, but Mazda offers quite a lot of choice when it comes to the powertrain of the Mazda3 Sport. GX models get a standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 155 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque, but GS and GT versions of the compact hatch get upgraded to a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that ups the power ante to 186 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque.
However, that’s certainly not the end of the options, as the range-topping Mazda3 Sport GT is also available with a 2.5-litre turbo-four, which provides it with an impressive 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for all three trim levels, with a six-speed automatic available. But if you opt for the GT model with the turbo-four engine, there’s no manual option as the automatic transmission comes standard.
Another key feature of the 2022 Mazda3 Sport across all three trim levels is a very generous level of standard equipment. The impressive safety features have helped it earn a five-star rating from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ status the IIHS. Every model gets a rearview camera, Dynamic Stability Control, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Even features as advanced as Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart City Brake Support (front and rear), and Distance and Speed Alert are standard with GS and GT versions of the Mazda3.
GT models pile on the luxury with standard leather upholstery, navigation, a premium Bose sound system with 12 speakers, dual-zone climate control, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and even a windshield-projected colour Active Driving Display.
The 2022 Mazda3 Sport is an incredibly stylish and desirable car that will turn heads wherever it goes, but this is a car where the beauty is far more than just skin-deep. The overall quality is excellent throughout, standard equipment levels are very high, and the performance and handling are outstanding.
