Until recently, if you were a fan of Mazda’s incredibly stylish SUVs, but five seats weren’t enough for your needs, you had to look elsewhere. However, the 2023 Mazda CX-9 allows you to transport up to seven people around Surrey, Burnaby, Langley, Richmond, or anywhere in the Vancouver area in comfort and style.
It’s hard to find fault with the exterior styling of Mazda’s crossover SUVs, and the three-row, seven-seat 2023 Mazda CX-9 delivers that gorgeous styling in a package that’s bigger and even more versatile than its smaller siblings. It’s easy for three-row SUVs to look a little elongated and minivan-like to accommodate the third row, but the CX-9 is a standout model that doesn’t compromise style and desirability in the name of practicality. Yes, there are bigger SUVs around with more legroom for third-row passengers. However, the CX-9 considers style and a great driving experience as important as overt practicality.
There are five models in the 2023 Mazda CX-9 lineup to choose from. The range begins with the entry-level GS trim, which looks and feels anything but “entry-level.” The next model in the lineup is the GS-L, and then you have the GT, Kuro, and range-topping Signature.
Things couldn’t be any more straightforward regarding powertrains for the 2023 Mazda CX-9, as all models get the same components, and every CX-9 gets all-wheel-drive as part of the standard specification. No two-wheel drive options are available, which leaves you free to concentrate on the comfort, safety, connectivity, and driver-assist features you want and need.
Under the hood of every CX-9 is an achingly modern turbo-four gas engine that develops a very healthy 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque (high octane fuel). The power goes to all four wheels through a Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode and a Drive Selection switch. The estimated fuel economy ratings are 11.6 L/100 km in the city and 9.1 L/100 km on the highway, and the maximum towing capacity of the 2023 CX-9 is 1,588 kg.
Despite its midsize dimensions and classification, the interior of the CX-9 is surprisingly spacious. The third-row seats are a bit of a compromise as they are in every midsize, but there’s plenty of room up front, and the second-row passengers enjoy a cavernous 1,001 mm of legroom. If you are not using the third-row seats, you have a generous 1,082 litres of cargo volume, and there’s still 407 litres of cargo volume when the third-row seats are up and in use.
All models feature a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. However, from the GT trim level and higher, the CX-9 gets upgraded to include a standard 12-speaker premium Bose sound system, navigation, SiriusXM, Homelink wireless control system, LED interior lighting, and ventilated front seats. The GT is also the first model in the range that lets you add the available hands-free, height-adjustable power rear liftgate.
The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is a superb midsize crossover that doesn’t fall short in any area. The three-row Mazda is a fantastic package that’s as great to drive as it is to look at and can still seat up to seven people in some comfort.
