It’s easy to get swept along on a wave of crossovers and trucks when you’re shopping for a new vehicle in Surrey or elsewhere in the Vancouver area, but the 2023 Mazda3 Sedan is a compact car that reminds us there can be more to life and driving than SUVs. The little Mazda delivers premium style and quality at affordable prices, and it’s even available with manual transmission for more engaged drivers and all-wheel drive to cope with winter road conditions.
The exterior styling of the 2023 Mazda3 Sedan is something of an exercise in restrained elegance that sets it apart from its supposed rivals. The outline is sleek, sporty, and athletic, but it also retains more premium air than you’d expect at this price point. The look of the Mazda is sporty enough to grab your attention, but in a grown-up way, that’s anything but “boy-racer.”
Depending on how you look at these things, there are three or five trim levels in the 2023 Mazda3 Sedan lineup. The first model is the GX, the mid-range offering is the GS, and the GT is the top specification. However, the GS specification is also available with a Luxury Package, and you can also have a GT with a more powerful turbocharged engine that turns it into the GT Turbo.
In its most affordable GX guise, the 2023 Mazda3 Sedan comes with a 155-horsepower 2.0-litre inline-four engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and front-wheel drive. A six-speed automatic transmission is available, and you can have that same configuration with more features by going up a level to the GS trim. However, the GS is also available with a larger 191-horsepower 2.5-litre inline four that also gets you the automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The GS Luxury Package is what some would regard as the next trim level. You can only have the GS Luxury with the automatic transmission, but you can choose between the 2.0-litre (FWD) and 2.5-litre (AWD) engines. The range-topping GT model is only available with the 2.5-litre engine, but you can choose between the manual transmission and front-wheel drive or the automatic with all-wheel drive. The ultimate Mazda3 Sedan is the GT Turbo, which adds a 2.5-litre turbo-four engine and AWD to the GT specification. The turbo-four puts out 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque if you use regular 87-octane fuel or an even more impressive 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. if you use premium 93-octane fuel.
Even the most affordable version of the 2023 Mazda3 Sedan gets standard 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, LED lights, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry, push-button start, heated front seats, and an 8.8-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity.
All models also get an impressive list of standard safety features, including a wide-angle rearview camera, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring System, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. If you go beyond the entry-level GX, however, the standard specification then includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Smart City Brake Support Front, Distance and Speed Alert, Smart Brake Support Front, Forward Pedestrian Detection, Distance Recognition Support System, Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane-keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Driver Attention Alert.
The 2023 Mazda3 Sedan is a stylish, affordable, yet premium reminder of life in the auto industry beyond SUVs and pickup trucks.
