The 2024 Mazda CX-50 is a ruggedly stylish compact crossover SUV that takes the brand into an exciting new direction of adventure lifestyle vehicles. The CX-50 boasts the same levels of style and panache as other Mazda models for driving around the streets of Surrey, Burnaby, Langley, Richmond, and the wider Vancouver area. However, the CX-50 presents a more rugged approach with the kind of off-road capability and style not previously associated with Mazda.
Trim levels and styling
Mazda crossovers and cars are consistently among their class’s most stylish and attractive models, and some high-spec models even challenge luxury models costing considerably more. The sensational 2024 Mazda CX-50 still has that signature sleek, sporty, and futuristic look associated with the brand, but it adds an extra dimension with squared-off black cladding over the wheels, bulging fenders, and a wing grille with tips that wander under the headlights. Vertical air intakes are new styling cues that appear below the headlights, and the bumpers appear to be set higher than usual and feature fake skid plates.
New nameplates are commonly offered initially in a small number of high-specification trim levels, and the CX-50 didn’t stray too from that format with three extremely well-equipped trim levels available last year. The first of the pair was the GS-L, and the other was the GT that morphed into the GT Turbo if you went for the optional engine. However, the lineup is expanding for 2024 with the arrival of a new, range-topping Meridian trim level.
Powertrains and performance
The 2024 Mazda CX-50 clarifies its intentions with no such thing as a two-wheel-drive version. To burnish their off-road credentials, all CX-50 trim levels get Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD system as part of the standard specification. The AWD system is similar to what we see in other Mazda nameplates, but this system has a more advanced traction control system for increased off-road capability. Selectable drive modes allow the driver to alter performance characteristics for Normal, Sport, Towing, and Off-Road driving by using torque vectoring to shift torque from the rear axle at a stop to the front wheels as speed increases.
The GS-L and GT come standard with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine under the hood that puts out 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. However, if you want to take CX-50 performance to another level, the GT trim is also available with a 2.5-litre twin-scroll turbo-four that ups the power ante to an impressive 256 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque using 93 octane gas, or 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. with 87 octane gas. Both engines send their power to all four wheels through a standard six-speed automatic transmission, and the turbo engine is standard with the Meridian trim.
Features and equipment
It would be insulting to refer to the GS-L as a “base” or “entry-level” model because the standard equipment is more like a mid-range model or higher. Standard GS-L features include a power liftgate, dual-zone climate control, AWD, 17-inch alloys, LED headlights, keyless entry, four USB ports, a 10.25-inch display infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, and plenty more.
The GT trim looks and feels like an authentic luxury vehicle with upscale features that include genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, wireless phone charging, navigation, Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), Traffic Jam Assist, a 6-way power passenger seat, and a driver memory seat. The Meridian is largely a styling package with that sought-after blacked-out look, including 18-inch metallic black alloy wheels with all-terrain Falken tires.
