You’re not going to see as many five-door hatches on the roads and highways of Surrey and the wider Vancouver area as you will in places like Europe and Japan. This part of the world traditionally prefers four-door sedans to hatches, but if any car is going to challenge preconceptions of hatches, the 2024 Mazda3 Sport has to be the one. The Mazda3 Sport wears the hatchback body style better than almost any other, and things get even better if you take the time to look a little closer and get behind the wheel.
The 2024 Mazda3 Sport is available in five trim levels, but it could be six, depending on your point of view. The Mazda3 Sport section of the Mazda website initially shows five available trim levels, but it appears to be just four when you get to the comparisons. It’s not a mistake, and there’s no deception involved. The whole thing comes down to whether or not you believe a different engine or an upgrade package justifies an entirely separate trim level.
What isn’t in dispute is that the lineup starts with the entry-level 2024 Mazda3 Sport GX trim level, and above that, there are the GS, GT, and range-topping Suna models. The fifth trim level comes about because you can upgrade the top-of-the-range GT with a more powerful turbocharged engine and AWD, so it makes it easier for all concerned when that version is shown as the GT Turbo. What isn’t in dispute is the Suna is now the top-of-the-range version of the Mazda3 Hatchback.
It would be hard for anyone to claim that the 2024 Mazda3 Sport didn’t live up to its name with how it looks, but it would be a major disappointment if it didn’t deliver a driving experience and performance worthy of that billing. Thankfully, that’s not a concern, as the Mazda3 Sport offers excellent driver engagement at all levels, and you can configure it in several ways to suit your taste and how you like to drive. The non-turbo engines are available with a sporty six-speed manual transmission, but if AWD is on your list of desired features, you’ll need to go with the six-speed automatic.
The standard powerplant under the hoods of most models is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that provides the compact Mazda with 191 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. Those who want the most potent version of the Mazda3 Sport can have a 2.5-litre turbo-four that’s only available with the GT trim level (in GT Turbo form) and the range-topping Suna. This one develops 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. with standard gas or an even more impressive 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. when run on premium fuel.
The Mazda3 Hatchback can’t beat larger vehicles for cargo and passenger volume, but it can compensate for its diminutive proportions with an interior that exudes style, quality, and impressive specifications. There are fewer trim levels here than in some other markets, making the entry-level Mazda3 Sport GX a well-equipped model that’s well worth considering. Standard GX features include 16-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, heated front seats, and an infotainment system with an 8.8-inch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Step up to the GS trim level, and you then get upgraded to a heated steering wheel, automatic dual-zone climate control, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go function. The GS also allows you to upgrade from the standard engine to the 2.5-litre unit and AWD. The GT takes things to another level with a standard 360-degree View Monitor, front and rear parking sensors, 18-inch alloy wheels, genuine leather upholstery, an Adaptive Front-lighting System, automatic headlight levelling, satellite navigation, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system.
The 2024 Mazda3 Sport isn’t going to change the world, but it could change minds about the relative merits of the five-door hatchback body style.
